چکیده

The cytoplasm of the interior of maturing pine tracheids is revealed by scanning electron microscopy as a lamellate and filamentous intravacuolar reticulum immersed in vacuolar sap. Formation of cytoplasmic spherules and the breakdown of the cytoplasmic reticulum initiate protoplast disintegration that terminates in tracheid maturation. The process is believed to involve vacuolar membrane transformations.

Dimensional Changes of Tracheids during Drying of Radiata Pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) Compression Woods: A Study Using Variable-Pressure Scanning Electron Microscopy (VP-SEM)

Variable-pressure scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the dimensional changes in longitudinal, tangential and radial directions, on wetting and drying, of tracheids of opposite wood (OW) and three grades of compression woods (CWs), including severe CW (SCW) and two grades of mild compression wood (MCW) (MCW1 and MCW2) in corewood of radiata pine (Pinus radiata) saplings. The CW...

Peculiar traits of wood in a leaning stem of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.)

The paper analyses biometrical and anatomical traits of wood in a leaning stem of pine trees. For study purpose, five pine trees (Pinus sylvestris L.) with a visibly leaning stem were chosen. Wood samples were taken at three different stem heights, that is, below the stem curvature, at the curvature and above the curvature. Microscopic specimens were prepared and used for the following measurem...

Biomechanical and hydraulic determinants of tree structure in Scots pine: anatomical characteristics.

The development of anatomical, hydraulic and biomechanical properties in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stems aged 7 to 59 years was followed. The hydraulic diameter and length of tracheids increased with age to a maximum at 15 and 35 years, respectively. Number of tracheids per unit of sapwood area decreased with age to a minimum of 500-600 tracheids mm(-2). Variations in specific hydraulic ...

Drought alters timing, quantity, and quality of wood formation in Scots pine.

Drought has been frequently discussed as a trigger for forest decline. Today, large-scale Scots pine decline is observed in many dry inner-Alpine valleys, with drought discussed as the main causative factor. This study aimed to analyse the impact of drought on wood formation and wood structure. To study tree growth under contrasting water supply, an irrigation experiment was installed in a matu...

Function and dynamics of auxin and carbohydrates during earlywood/latewood transition in scots pine.

In temperate regions the annual pattern of wood development is characterized by the formation of radially narrow and thick walled latewood cells. This takes place at the later part of the growing season when cambial cell division declines. To gain new insight into the regulation of this process, micro-analytical techniques were used to visualize the distribution of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), s...
